Since its creation in 2001, Sinfonia de Montréal has had ties with the Saint-Jean-Baptiste Church. It is therefore only fitting that the orchestra inaugurate the launch of the fundraising campaign with this benefit concert.
Only days before the 100th anniversary of the death of composer Camille Saint-Saëns, rediscover the brilliance of his most famous symphonic composition, as well as the virtuosity of his cello concerto. Relish the sublime sounds of the great Casavant organ and the bright atmosphere of Saint-Jean-Baptiste Church.
For those who wish to further discover these works as well as the secrets of the great organ, a pre-concert cocktail with Louis Lavigueur and Jean-Willy Kunz is offered.
Jean-Willy Kunz, organist
Jean-Willy Kunz is the Organist in Residence of the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal at the Maison symphonique. His performances with the OSM include concerts conducted by Kent Nagano, Masaaki Suzuki, François-Xavier Roth, Vasily Petrenko, Juraj Valčuha, and John Storgårds. He has also performed as a soloist with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the Quebec Symphony Orchestra, and Les Violons du Roy.
Jean-Willy Kunz’ interest and versatility in different styles of music are reflected in the various projects he has been involved with for the last ten years, and which shed new light on the pipe organ, including jazz music in duo with Branford Marsalis and with the Ensemble InSpirations, pop music with Pierre Lapointe, Rufus and Martha Wainwright, stage music with the Cirque du Soleil, contemporary music with the Société de musique contemporaine du Québec and with the Quatuor Bozzini, and baroque music with the Ensemble Caprice and with Les Boréades.
His discography includes many recordings which reflect the broad range of his musical influences: Jean-Willy Kunz au Grand Orgue Pierre-Béique ; Symphonie et créations pour orgue et orchestre with the OSM (which was awarded a Juno in 2016) ; Impressions with the Ensemble InSpirations (organ, clarinet, saxophone, trombone, double bass, and percussion) ; The Pipes are Calling for organ and trombone ; Punkt with Pierre Lapointe ; André Gagnon Baroque for harpsichord and symphony orchestra.
He is organ professor at the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal, titular organist at the church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste, and artistic director of the Canadian International Organ Competition.
